Actinic cheilitis is an inflammatory oral potentially malignant disorder, that affects mainly the lower lip, due to chronic and progressive exposure to ultraviolet radiation sunlight. This case reports a 61-year-old man, that was referred to the Dental Clinic University because of some ulcers in lower lip region for approximately 6 months. Extra-oral physical examination revealed cracked and whitish areas in lower lip, near to the ulcer, suggesting actinic cheilitis. An incisional biopsy was performed, and the histopathological analysis confirmed the presence of oral mucosa consisting of a parakeratinized squamous stratified epithelium, with basophilic degeneration of collagen, and the clinical diagnosis of actinic cheilitis. The patient was advised to avoid sun exposure and to use sunscreen and hat. There were no signs of recurrence of the lesion in clinical follow-up. This case reinforces the importance of early diagnosis of actinic cheilitis and to warn the population about this pathology, since it may evolute to lip squamous cell carcinomas.
